Dubai International Airport (DXB) is poised to achieve a historic milestone in passenger traffic, forecasting 91.9 million passengers for 2024 and surpassing its previous record of 89.1 million set in 2018. By the end of Q3 2024, DXB handled 68.6 million passengers, with 23.2 million expected in the final quarter, driven by a bustling winter season and festive travel.
Major events such as the DP World Tour Championship, Emirates Dubai 7s, festive markets, and New Year’s Eve celebrations are drawing millions of visitors. Dubai’s thriving cruise season further boosts passenger volumes, supported by the city’s superior air and sea connectivity.
The third quarter of 2024 saw 23.7 million passengers pass through DXB, a 6.3% year-on-year increase, and 111,300 flights handled, pushing the year-to-date total to 327,700—up 6.4% from 2023.
DXB’s CEO, Paul Griffiths, noted a significant rise in direct traffic, which is expected to constitute 60% of Q4 traffic, up from 50% in Q3. This shift highlights Dubai’s evolution into a global hub for tourism, business, and residency, underpinned by a booming real estate market and growing appeal for global talent.
London emerged as the top destination, with 2.9 million passengers, followed by Riyadh (2.3 million, up 25.8%), Mumbai (1.8 million), Jeddah (1.7 million), New Delhi (1.6 million), and Istanbul (1.3 million).
Growth in seat capacity from Western Europe (+237,000) and the CIS (+301,000), along with new carriers such as ITA, Condor, Hainan, and Druk Air, has fueled the expansion. Budget carriers Transavia and Eurowings operating from Dubai World Central (DWC) have also enhanced connectivity to European destinations.
India remains the top source of passengers with 8.9 million, followed by Saudi Arabia (5.6 million, up 15.2%), the UK (4.6 million, up 4.7%), and Pakistan (3.4 million). With its packed winter calendar and iconic attractions, Dubai International Airport is set to solidify its status as the world’s busiest airport hub in 2024.
