Emirates bans Power Banks on Flights from October 1

Emirates has confirmed that passengers will no longer be allowed to use power banks during flights from October 1.

While travellers may still carry one power bank onboard, it must meet specific conditions set by the airline. However, usage of the device during the flight will be strictly prohibited.

The move follows safety concerns linked to lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in power banks. These batteries contain lithium ions suspended in an electrolyte solution, allowing them to move between electrodes during charging and discharging.

According to Emirates, if a battery becomes damaged or overcharged, it can trigger thermal runaway—a self-accelerating process where heat builds up faster than it can be released. This can lead to dangerously high temperatures, potentially causing fires, explosions, or the release of toxic gases.

The airline’s decision comes amid a series of incidents globally where malfunctioning power banks have been blamed for fires on board aircraft.
