Starting September 1, 2024, UAE residents and tourists flying to Schengen countries will be restricted to carrying a maximum of 100ml of liquid per container in their hand luggage. This temporary measure, announced by the European Council, aims to address a technical issue and is not a response to any new security threat.
The European Commission explained that this restriction will apply to airports equipped with Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB). Although some EU airports currently allow larger liquid containers due to these systems, the limit will revert to 100ml per container from September 1, 2024. Airports that already enforce the 100ml limit or lack EDSCB equipment will not be affected.
This adjustment is part of a broader effort by the Commission to ensure safe and secure air travel in collaboration with member states and the European Civil Aviation Conference.
Finland’s national airline, Finnair, has also confirmed that the 100ml limit will apply at European airports, including Helsinki Airport, from September 1, 2024. The total liquid allowance per passenger remains at two liters, and the rule will not impact transfer passengers at Helsinki Airport.
